Commuters across New Jersey now have a faster, more flexible way to ride, as NJ TRANSIT announced the statewide expansion of its “FARE-PAY” card.
The reusable, tap-and-go card is now accepted on all NJ TRANSIT buses, as well as the Newark Light Rail, Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, and the River LINE systems.
According to a statement released by NJ TRANSIT officials, the card offers customers the ability to store monthly passes, 10-trip bus tickets, or cash value, bringing convenience and speed to thousands of daily riders.
“With the expansion of FARE-PAY, we’re making it easier for customers to purchase tickets and passes with greater flexibility,” said NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kris Kolluri.
“It’s part of our ongoing commitment to modernize and enhance the everyday experience for those who rely on NJ TRANSIT.”
The program, which began as a pilot earlier this year at select Park & Ride locations in Wayne and Clifton, has now rolled out across the state.
Beginning September 19, customers can purchase fare cards loaded with bus or light rail monthly passes at ticket vending machines or at select bus ticket offices, including Port Authority Bus Terminal, Old Bridge, Lakewood, Atlantic City, Wildwood, and Camden’s Walter Rand Transportation Center. Starting October 1, riders can also buy cards preloaded with 10-trip bus tickets.
Once loaded, the cards can be tapped at onboard validators when boarding buses or at station platforms for light rail service.
NJ TRANSIT also announced that retail outlets will begin selling the cards, giving customers additional points of access to reload funds with ease.
Beyond convenience, the FARE-PAY card comes with added security and environmental benefits.

Riders can register their cards online to safeguard balances against loss, review trip activity, and set up auto-reload options. The move also cuts down on paper tickets, speeds up boarding, and reduces cash handling.
The cards are not yet available for use on NJ TRANSIT’s commuter rail system, but officials say the expansion marks a significant step toward creating a more modern, contactless travel experience.
