A 26-year-old Morris County man was killed in an early morning crash on Interstate 80 in Parsippany-Troy Hills Township after being struck by his own vehicle, according to New Jersey State Police.

Authorities said troopers responded to the westbound lanes near milepost 41.8 at approximately 5:39 a.m.

A preliminary investigation determined that Daniel Sandchez Valencia, 26, of Wharton, was driving a Toyota SUV westbound when he lost control, veered off the left side of the highway, traveled down a grassy median and struck a tree.

Police said Valencia exited the SUV, but the vehicle subsequently rolled backward, striking him before hitting a second tree.

Valencia sustained fatal injuries.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation by New Jersey State Police.
