NJ Man Charged with Murder in Connection to Fatal Shooting

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes announced on Monday that, following an investigation conducted by the Paterson Police Department in collaboration with the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office, 29-year-old Jaleel State, a resident of Paterson, has been charged in connection to a fatal shooting that occurred on October 12 in the vicinity of Summer Street and Hamilton Avenue in the City of Paterson.

Mr. State faces a series of serious charges, including first-degree Murder, second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, second-degree Certain Persons Not to Possess a Weapon, and first-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon.

The tragic incident unfolded on October 12, 2023, at approximately 1:16 a.m., when officers responded to a report of a shooting in the area of Summer Street and Hamilton Avenue in Paterson.  

Upon their arrival, officers discovered the lifeless body of 47-year-old Adalberto Roman, a Paterson resident, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

Tragically, Mr. Roman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jaleel State is currently being held in custody at the Bergen County Jail, awaiting his initial appearance at Central Judicial Processing.

The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office intends to file a motion for pre-trial detention, which will be reviewed by a Superior Court Judge at a date and time to be determined by the Court.

As the investigation into this tragic incident continues, authorities encourage anyone with additional information related to the case to come forward and assist in bringing justice to the victim's family.
