NJ Man Arrested for Alleged Murder of His Mother

Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland announced the arrest of Jeffrey Surgent, a 46-year-old Ocean City resident, in connection with the homicide of his mother.

It happened on Friday, December 8, around 3:59 pm when the Ocean City Police Department received a distressing call from Jeffrey Surgent, who claimed to suffer from mental illness and confessed to killing his mother.

Upon receiving the call, officers promptly responded to Surgent's residence in the 600 block of 6th Street in Ocean City.

There, they discovered the lifeless body of Surgent's 74-year-old mother. Police said Surgent was apprehended without resistance.

The investigation into this tragic event is being conducted by the Ocean City Police Department Detective Bureau, in cooperation with the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit and the New Jersey Southern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

Jeffrey Surgent now faces charges of Murder (1st degree), Possession of Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose (3rd degree), and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (4th degree).

He is currently in police custody at a secure medical facility.
