According to information sent by the New Jersey Department of Health, the initiative is designed to help ease the burden of rising heating and energy costs, particularly for households with young children.

Eligible families will be randomly selected and can apply the grant directly to their gas, electric, or water accounts. No separate application is required.

The program is funded through the American Water Charitable Foundation and administered by Promise, a technology company focused on streamlining assistance delivery.

Gateway WIC, which serves Camden County, is overseeing local implementation with support from the state.

Officials say the effort comes at a time when many families are facing higher utility bills, adding financial strain during pregnancy and early childhood years.

Governor Mikie Sherrill said the pilot reflects the administration’s commitment to making New Jersey more affordable and delivering direct relief to residents in need.

In New Jersey, WIC serves more than 250,000 residents annually by providing access to nutritious food, health referrals, and breastfeeding support.

To qualify, household income must be at or below 185% of the federal poverty level.

State leaders say the pilot could serve as a model for future efforts aimed at helping vulnerable families manage essential living expenses.
