Authorities have identified the two victims found dead inside a Hillsborough Township home in what investigators are calling an isolated double homicide.
According to information released by Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald, Chief of County Detectives Francisco Roman Jr., and Hillsborough Township Police Chief Michael McMahon, officers were called to a residence on Cornell Trail around 4:12 p.m. on September 25, 2025, to conduct a welfare check.
When officers were unable to reach anyone inside, they later gained entry at approximately 6:24 p.m.
Once inside, police encountered an armed man on the second floor. Two responding Hillsborough officers fired their weapons, striking the individual, who was transported to a nearby trauma center and remains in critical condition.
While searching the home, officers discovered the bodies of two adults, later identified as Mr. David Lin, 69, and his wife, Mrs. Jean Lin, 69, inside separate bedrooms on the second floor.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Somerset.
A postmortem examination conducted by the Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined the couple died from blunt force injuries to the head, and both deaths were ruled homicides.
Investigators from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, Hillsborough Police Department, and the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office responded to the scene.
Officials said early findings indicate the tragedy was an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
