Winslow Township High School was briefly evacuated on Friday afternoon after school officials and a School Resource Officer (SRO) learned that a student may have been in possession of an explosive device.

According to information released by the Winslow Township Police Department, the incident happened on Friday, October 10, when the SRO assigned to the high school at 10 Cooper Folly Road detained a student and discovered the item was a large firework.

Out of an abundance of caution — and as rumors quickly spread through the school — officials ordered an evacuation.

Police confirmed that the evacuation was carried out without incident, and all students and staff were safely secured.

Winslow Township Police received assistance from the Waterford Township Police Department, while the Winslow Township Fire Department and EMS were on scene as a precautionary measure.

Specialized units, including the Camden County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit and Bomb Squad, searched the building but did not locate any additional contraband.

Police later confirmed that two students were detained in connection with the incident.

The Winslow Township School District, along with all responding public safety agencies, emphasized that their coordinated response ensured the safety of students and staff while minimizing disruption to the school day.

While the item was determined to be a firework rather than a more dangerous device, law enforcement noted that all threats involving explosives are taken seriously to protect the community.
