New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin praised a federal appeals court ruling that keeps President Trump’s executive order attempting to end birthright citizenship on hold.

In a unanimous decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit upheld a nationwide injunction, blocking the administration from enforcing the order.

The executive action sought to deny citizenship to children born in the U.S. to non-citizen parents,  a move courts have repeatedly found unconstitutional.

Attorney General Platkin released a statement saying,

“The President cannot rewrite citizenship with the stroke of a pen. We are grateful the First Circuit has unanimously agreed this order violates centuries of Supreme Court precedent and must remain blocked.”

According to reporting by the New York Times and confirmed by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, the ruling is the latest in a string of court decisions that have rejected attempts to undermine the 14th Amendment’s Citizenship Clause.

The matter is expected to reach the U.S. Supreme Court in the coming year.
