NJ AG Investigating Death Following Police Motor Vehicle Stop in Camden

Camden County

The Attorney General’s Office is conducting an investigation of a fatal incident that occurred last evening when a driver who was stopped by Camden County Police Department officers attempted to flee, crashed the car he was driving in an underpass, and ran on foot up an embankment onto I-676, where he was struck by non-law enforcement vehicles and fatally injured.

Officials said the name of the decedent – a 26-year-old male civilian – is not being released at this time.

The fatal incident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. on I-676 in the area of Pine Street.

The investigation is being conducted pursuant to a law enacted in January 2019, P.L.2019, c.1, which requires that the Attorney General’s Office conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody.
