Officials at 'Young Black and Gifted Enterprises' launched their first segment to its new "Cut & Create " campaign where youth from around the county meet and speak about issues that concern growing in the community.
Officials say the campaign was inspired by the fatal barbershop shooting of Mr. Sabor Townes, who not only was a well-respected local barber but a young philanthropist that always gave back to the community through his passion for cutting hair.
"The "Barbershop Talk" event promotes a visible and public message against gun violence and encourages the youth to set higher goals to accomplish better outcomes," officials announced.
Organizers say the event hopes to build self-esteem, courage, wisdom, and knowledge.
The "Cut & Create" campaign takes place every 3rd Sunday at the Newark Clubhouse community center and engages young men from the ages 12-19 years old in free haircuts and open, constructive conversation highlighting various topics at hand.
Organizers say the campaign is the brainchild of CEO and young activist Nyjee Coram. Who believes that creating a sacred space for young men in the community will not only impact them but in hopes of implementing characteristics into each individual so they can continue the movement by paying it forward.
According to a statement on the organization's website, through their mentoring program, young men in the community will learn the importance of education and its effects outside of the classroom.
"We will highlight the importance of employment, community service, and the fundamentals on how to become a successful man. In order to achieve these goals, the young men in our program must learn to be confident, responsible, honest and independent. Once these goals are met, our young leaders have taken the first step in becoming an effective member of our society," the statement said.
