Newark’s Mayor Issues Updated Statement Regarding New Year’s Day Fatal Police Shooting

Newark

The following is a statement from Newark Mayor Ras Baraka:

“After reviewing the video from the January 1 police shooting incident, I found it to be tragic, disturbing, yet incomplete. While the Attorney General’s Office is conducting an ongoing investigation, we are asking the public’s help to fill in some gaps.

"We will be asking the Attorney General’s Office to turn over information to our consent decree unit to review if the use of force or any other policy was violated.

We will also ask that all information be turned over to our Civilian Complaint Review Board to investigate and provide recommendations.

Lastly, we will be requesting that our Public Safety Director look into expanding the use of body cameras to include plainclothes units as well.

“The police officer involved in the shooting is still on administrative leave until the investigation ends.

“If anyone has any information, please come forward and contact the Attorney General’s Office at 609-292-4925 or 609-984-5828.”
