Young athletes from across Newark and surrounding communities will have the opportunity to sharpen their football skills while learning valuable life lessons during the 5th Annual Tahir Whitehead Youth Football Camp this weekend.
According to information sent by the City of Newark, the free camp will take place on Saturday, July 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Tahir Whitehead Sports Complex, located at 251–289 18th Avenue in Newark.
The event is open to boys and girls entering grades K through 12 and is designed to provide more than just athletic instruction.
Organizers say participants will receive hands-on coaching from former NFL linebacker and Newark native Tahir Whitehead while developing important skills such as teamwork, leadership, discipline, and perseverance.
Camp activities will include position-specific football instruction, speed and agility drills, one-on-one competitions, mental toughness training, and opportunities for participants to meet and interact with Whitehead throughout the day.
According to the information provided, Whitehead said the camp represents an opportunity to give back to the city that helped shape his life while encouraging young people to pursue success through hard work, strong character, and dedication.
Now in its fifth year, the annual event has grown into one of Newark’s signature youth sports programs, bringing together families, coaches, educators, and community leaders to create positive experiences and mentorship opportunities for local children.
According to the City of Newark, the football camp is made possible through partnerships with the City of Newark, the Newark Board of Education, and the Department of Recreation, Cultural Affairs and Senior Services.
Organizers encourage families to register early, as a large turnout is expected.
