Newark West Ward Shooting Leaves Man Dead

Authorities in Newark are investigating an early morning shooting that left a man dead in the city's West Ward.

According to preliminary reports, police responded to reports of shots fired that rang out at around midnight in the 100 block of Smith Street where arriving officers found an adult male suffering gunshot wounds at that location.

The unidentified victim was later pronounced dead by medical professionals shortly after. According to police, two black males who wore hoodies ran from the scene towards Halsted Street immediately after the shooting.

Police set up a crime scene where they searched the area for evidence in an attempt to determine a motive for the shooting. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office will handle the investigation which is active and ongoing.

No arrests have been made.
