Newark West Ward House Fire Leaves Woman Critical, Dog Dead

The cause and origin of a fire that tore through a Newark West Ward house and critically injured a woman is under investigation by the Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit.

Officials say Newark firefighters extinguished the blaze and rescued two adults from a 3-story, multi-family home on Tuesday evening.

According to authorities, at approximately 6:45 p.m., Newark firefighters responded to a basement fire at 199 Sunset Avenue after receiving reports of a fire inside a house.

Upon firefighters' arrival., they found smoke and fire coming from a home that they entered and found a man and woman suffering injuries. Officials say crews rescued both residents.

According to authorities, the victims were transported to area hospitals for treatment where the woman is now in critical condition.

The family dog perished during the blaze according to fire officials.

Crews were able to bring the fire under control in control at approximately 7:09 p.m.
