The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is conducting an active and ongoing investigation into the motive for a shooting that fatally injured a male in the city's South Ward during the overnight hours.
According to a statement released by authorities, just before midnight, officers responded to reports of shots fired that rang out in the area of Madison Avenue and South 18th Street where arriving officers found the victim struck to head by bullets at that location.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office said the victim was rushed to University Hospital where the unidentified victim was pronounced dead a short time later.
There were no other injuries reported and the suspect remains at large according to The Prosecutor's Office.
