Newark South Ward Community Evacuated as Barricaded Suspect Fires at Police

A tense situation took place in Newark’s South Ward this afternoon as county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies converged on a barricaded suspect who allegedly opened fire on officers.

According to preliminary information, the incident began around 1:00 p.m. when authorities attempted to follow a suspect reportedly wanted on federal charges near 445 Irvine Turner Boulevard

The individual fled and barricaded himself inside a building at that location.

 

During the standoff, the suspect allegedly fired shots at law enforcement, prompting a massive response from SWAT teams and other tactical units.

 

 By 1:45 p.m., officers evacuated portions of the surrounding neighborhood as a precaution while negotiators and tactical teams worked to contain the situation.
 

The unidentified suspect was wounded by gunfire but it remains unclear/unconfirmed whether he was struck during an exchange of gunfire. His condition is unconfirmed but ‘severe’. 

 

The investigation is ongoing, and additional details—including the suspect’s identity and the nature of the federal charges—have not yet been released. Police continue to secure the area as they gather evidence.

UPDATE 3:17 pm: Director Emanuel Miranda said, at approximately 11:05 a.m., today, Monday, July 28, 2025, Newark Police responded to the 400 block of Irvine Turner Boulevard to assist the U.S. Marshals Service in apprehending a man wanted out of Hillside on a charge of attempted murder.
