Newark to Shut Down Stratford Place Public Housing Building Due to Being Unfit for Human Habitation

Newark

Residents at 17-23 Stratford Avenue have until the close of the business day on Thursday, November 21st, to find a place to live as Newark City officials plan to shut down the building due to horrid living conditions inside the structure.

According to a sign placed on several spots on the building, Newark City officials deemed the structure unfit for human habitation.

City officials listed an inspection date of November 14, 2019, where they found the unacceptable conditions that included evidence of rodents, roaches, mold, security issues, no smoke detectors, broken emergency doors, no common area lights, unsanitary garbage disposal system, water leakage, broken/missing steps, no working ventilation system and a host of other uncorrectable issues.

Officials say the building is owned by Aspen Stratford NY LLC of Spring Valley New York. Company officials did not return calls for comments.

Some residents inside the building said they were not given enough time to find new apartments.
