Newark Police Thwarts Man From Jumping Off Bridge

Police in Newark are reporting that officers of the 5th Precinct rescued a man from an attempted suicide on Saturday.

According to police, at approximately 6:40 p.m., officers responded to a call from the Elizabeth Police Department about a man standing on the opposite side of the guardrail at the Haynes Avenue overpass.

Police say officers arrived at the scene and observed the man appearing to want to leap off the bridge.

According to police, without alerting the victim, officers approached and grabbed the man then pulled him over the guardrail to safety.

EMS transported the man to University Hospital for evaluation.

Police say there were no injuries reported.

“I commend the officers for their swift actions and relentless commitment to preserving life,” Director Ambrose said. “This type of selfless courage is exemplary of the best and brightest of the Newark Police Division.”
