Newark Police Swiftly Arrest East Orange Man who Snatched Woman's Cell Phone in Newark's East Ward

Police officials in Newark announced the arrest of an 18-year-old East Orange man immediately after officers said he committed a theft yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon.

According to police, at approximately 4pm, a Newark Police Officer was flagged down by a woman who they said was engaged in a foot pursuit of an unidentified male.

Officials said, when officers interceded, the woman quickly explained that while talking on her cellphone on McWhorter Street, the suspect that she was chasing, grabbed her telephone then sprinted away from the scene.

The officer continued the foot pursuit and quickly apprehended the suspect without further incident.

Police identified the suspect as Mr. Kkiawu Mohamed and charged him with theft and resisting arrest.

Police said they found a replica handgun on Mohamed's person although he hasn’t been charged for possession at this juncture of the ongoing investigation.

The charges are accusations.

The suspect should be considered innocent unless convicted in a court of law.
