Newark city officials hosted a ceremony to promote 44 Newark Police supervisors during a public ceremony held today at St. Lucy’s Church in Newark.
“It’s truly an honor to welcome these new supervisors into higher ranks,” Director Ambrose said.
“Today’s promotions reflect the professionalism these men and women have exhibited to the people of the City of Newark throughout their careers. I commend each one for their consistent willingness to take on challenging leadership tasks, always with the safety and highest good of our neighborhoods in mind.”
The ceremony featured the swearing-in of 39 new police lieutenants and five new police captains, including the first openly gay captain.
The diverse group of newly promoted supervisors include 12 blacks, 17 whites and 15 Hispanics.
U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, Craig Carpenito provided encouraging remarks alongside Mayor Baraka, Director Ambrose and Chief of Police Henry.
A host of law enforcement partners from local, county, state and federal agencies also attended to lend their support.
