Newark Police Search for Auto Theft Suspect

Newark Police requests the public's help in identifying the male suspect in connection with an auto theft that occurred in the 900 block of Frelinghuysen Avenue on Saturday, May 14.

According to police officials, at approximately 8:10 a.m., a victim, who was repairing his vehicle, left the keys in the ignition and stepped away momentarily. 

When the victim returned, the vehicle, a black 2020 Honda Civic, was gone. 

The detectives investigating this incident reviewed surveillance footage of the below individual entering the vehicle, backing into a building and causing the front bumper to fall off before fleeing inside the vehicle, heading north on Frelinghuysen Avenue.

Police said that the suspect is described as a Black male with a beard and bald head. 

He was wearing a black leather jacket along with a black and white striped polo shirt, dark-colored pants and dark-colored shoes. He also was carrying a black bookbag.

Newark police officials urge anyone with information on the identity of this suspect to call the Division's 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477).  

All anonymous Crime Stopper tips are kept confidential and could result in a reward.
