Newark Police Officers Injured After Suspect Maces Them, Points Gun, and Flees

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda reported that two police officers were injured after being maced by a suspect who also pointed a handgun at them during an investigation on Thursday afternoon.

 

At approximately 1:37 p.m. on July 31, 2025, officers were flagged down by a victim on Halsted Street near Norwood Place who reported his stolen motorcycle was pinging on a tracking system near Smith Street and Norwood Place.

When officers arrived at the location to investigate, they encountered a male suspect who sprayed mace at them, pointed a firearm, and then fled on Smith Street toward East Orange.

 

The injured officers were transported to University Hospital for treatment. Authorities said the incident remains under investigation.
