Newark Police Officer Injured Following Formaldehyde Spill During Arrest of Five Drug Suspects

Police in Newark are reporting the arrest of five Newark residents on drug-related charges that occurred on Friday.

According to Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose, shortly after 2 p.m., 3rd Precinct Narcotics Detectives responded to the area of Court and Hill streets to investigate citizen and business complaints of drug dealing occurring in the area.

Director Ambrose said after monitoring the location, detectives arrested Mr. Abul Robinson, 42, Mr. Anthony Facey, 22, Mr. Eddie Monzon, 21, and Mr. Demar Davis, 33, on charges of possession of crack cocaine, distribution of crack cocaine, possession with the intent to distribute, distribution within 1,000-ft. Of a school, possession of crack cocaine within a 1,000-ft. Of a school and conspiracy.

Director Ambrose said EMS transported one detective to the hospital after a substance, later determined to be embalming fluid, spilled on him during the collection of evidence.

Detectives also arrested Mr. Thomas Furgunson, 27, on charges of wandering in the area with the intent to purchase narcotics Director Ambrose said.

Detectives recovered 20 bags of crack cocaine along with a container of a mixture of formaldehyde and other chemicals.

They also seized more than $736.00 in cash determined to be proceeds from drug sales.

These charges are merely accusations.

Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
