Newark Police Officer Injured in Crash While Responding to Emergency Call

A Newark Police officer was injured Monday afternoon when a marked police vehicle responding to a call for service was involved in a collision at a busy city intersection.

 

According to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, the crash occurred at approximately 1:53 p.m. at the intersection of 16th Avenue and Bergen Street.

 

Preliminary information indicates that a police vehicle traveling with its emergency lights and sirens activated was struck by a second vehicle as both vehicles attempted to cross the intersection.

 

The officer riding in the passenger seat of the police vehicle was transported to University Hospital for evaluation after reporting pain to a hand.

 

Authorities said no other injuries were reported. 

The driver of the private vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

 

The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under active investigation.
