Newark Police and Essex Sheriff Officers Hurt in Large Fight Involving High School Students

A Newark Police officer and Essex County Sheriff’s officer suffered non-life threatening injuries after they attempted to break up a large fight that stretched several blocks and ended in a park in the city's North Ward Friday afternoon.

According to Newark Police officials, several students from Barringer High School engaged in a brawl that began just before 3:30 p.m. on Park Avenue.

Police say participants made their way into Branch Brook Park where they fought at different locations inside the park.

Several Newark Police and Essex County Sheriff's officers arrived to find several juveniles engaged in physical confrontations.

Police officials say several individuals were arrested and the injured officers are expected to make a full recovery.

The incident remains under investigation.
