Newark Police Officer Charged with Sexually Assaulting Woman

Newark

Newark -- Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that Newark Police Detective Kenneth Gaulette, 33, of Manalapan has been arrested and charged with sexual assault and criminal coercion.

It is alleged that on Nov. 29, 2015 Gaulette forced a 40 year old woman to perform a sexual act on him while on police property in the city of Newark. He is charged with second degree sexual assault. He is also charged with fourth degree criminal coercion for suggesting she would receive favorable treatment from law enforcement if she performed the sex act.

A police officer for 9 years, Gaulette began with the Newark Police Department. He was laid off from the Newark Department in 2010 but returned to the Newark Police Department in 2012.

The Honorable Ronald Wigler, the Presiding Judge of the Criminal Division, set bail at $75,000 with no 10 percent alternative. Gaulette turned himself in today with his lawyer and posted bail.

These are accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they enter a guilty plea or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
