Newark Police, Fire and City Agencies Conduct Business Inspections With Summonses Issued, Three Stores Closed

City offcials announced today that a task force comprised of members of the Police and Fire Divisions, along with Code Enforcement Inspectors and Health Department Officials has been conducting business inspections over the past three weeks, resulting in five store closings.

This week’s operations were conducted Friday on South Orange Avenue between Sanford Avenue and Dover Streets and on Mount Vernon Place between Sanford Avenue and Eastern Parkway.

Seven businesses on South Orange Avenue were found to have violations.

Three were closed and two more were issued summonses. The following businesses were issues summonses and closed:

• 1 Creole Cuisine, 1084 South Orange Avenue

• JJKM Tax and Travel, 1092 South Orange Avenue

• Family Dollar, 1111, South Orange Avenue

The following businesses were sited violations but were not closed:

• F&M Carpet, 1092 South Orange Avenue

• Mt Big Mo Grocery Store, 1137 South Orange Avenue

Two business were found to have violations but were not sited, namely:

• Village Laundromat, 1124 South Orange Avenue

• Sunny Cleaner, 1149 South Orange Avenue

No business on Mount Vernon Place were closed, although the following were found to have violations:

• Bellefluer Unisex Salon, 79 Mount Vernon Place

• Suds City Laundromat, 77 Mount Vernon Place

• Puissance Divine Clothing, 74-87 Mount Vernon Place

• Jacob’s Restaurant and Bakery, 78-80 Mount Vernon Place

Last week, operations were conducted on Clinton Avenue between Martin Luther King Boulevard and Washington Street, and at Springfield Avenue between South 11th Street and 15th Street.

While none of the four businesses inspected on Clinton Avenue were closed, several are expected to receive citations for infractions ranging from expired paperwork, ceiling tile violations and other code violations.

No violations were found during the inspection of seven businesses inspected on Springfield Avenue.

During the first week’s operation, the following two businesses were closed:

• S.I.G. Variety Store, 99 Maple Avenue

• Delta Gas Station,194 Chancellor Avenue

And the below businesses were issued summonses for code violations, but remained open:

• Birts Nutrition, 97 Maple Avenue

• H&M Cuttz Barber Shop, 103 Maple Avenue

“These locations were selected in response to citizen complaints,” Director Ambrose said. “We will continue operations like these throughout the summer and will respond to all concerns brought to our attention that denigrate the quality of life in our city.”
