Newark Police, Essex Sheriff's Officers Break up Large Physical Altercation in Newark's North Ward

Officers from the Essex County Sheriff''s Office and Newark Police spent a portion of the Thursday afternoon breaking up a large physical altercation that occurred just after school hours in the city's North Ward.

According to police, the 'rolling fight' began outside of the Barringer High School located in the 90's block of Park Avenue and spanned several blocks and into the Branch Brook Park.

Police say, at one point, they pulled away several parents who engaged in the confrontation near the intersection of Clifton and Park avenues.

Authorities were able to quell the dispute in the area of Park Avenue and Garside Street just before 3:40 p.m.

Officials believe that Thursday's incident was related to stepped up security efforts around the school due to rumors that a fight was brewing and would take place on Wednesday.

More than a dozen police officers and school security guards assisted in the confrontation that remains under investigation.

There were no severe injuries immediately reported.
