UPDATE: Newark West Ward Foot Pursuit Ends in Arrest of East Orange Man on Weapon Charges

Newark East Orange

A press release submitted to the media by Newark Police announced the arrest of **Keith Jones, 24, of East Orange,** who police said was wanted for possession of a loaded weapon in an incident that occurred Tuesday.

According to the release, at approximately 3 p.m., police were alerted to a man with a gun in the area of South Orange and Vermont avenues.

Upon officer's arrival, police observed a man fitting the description of the suspect the press release said.

When the alleged suspect became aware of police presence, he sprinted away from the scene, tossing the weapon.

Police recovered the weapon, a loaded 9MM handgun, and the suspect eluded apprehension.

According to Newark Public Safety Directo Anthony Ambrose, detectives developed evidence that identified Keith Jones as the suspect in this incident, leading to authorities to issue a warrant for his arrest.

Yesterday, Community Focus Division Police patrolling in the Vailsburg section of the city reportedly picked up newly released wanted flyers—featuring Jones—when they observed him leaving a store Director Ambrose said.

Upon becoming aware of police presence, Jones ran to a residence on West End Avenue where a foot pursuit had officers make the arrest along with taking **Joshua Yearwood, 23, of Newark,**who Director Ambrose said was also featured on the wanted flyer and wanted for an outstanding warrant.

Director Ambrose said Newark Police charged Jones with unlawful possession of a weapon and resisting arrest while officers charged Yearwood with contempt of court.

The charges lodged against **Mr. Yearwood and Mr. Jones **charges are mere accusations.

Both men are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
