City Offcials announced that the Police Division will monitor streets around public high schools through its continuing Safe Schools Passageways Program during the 2017-2018 school year, beginning Tuesday, September 5th.
The program, aimed at enhancing the safety of public high school students departing from school each day, will include Newark Firefighters, as firehouses are widely dispersed throughout the city.
Firefighters will also provide high visibility within the designated monitoring areas city offcials said.
Designated areas where the city’s public high schools are located will be monitored from 2:30p.m. to 5p.m. each school day under the initiative and will involve each precinct and certain assigned fire companies.
“The Safe Passageways Program protects one of our city’s most precious resources, our young people,” Director Ambrose said. “Students present the next generation of Newark teachers, professional and public servants and they deserve every additional measure of safety we have to offer to help ensure that they feel safe after school each day.”
The Department’s Safe Passage initiative will be complimented by a collaborative initiative for the South Ward schools, the “Community Safe Student Project”.
The Community Safe Student Project identifies retail establishments, houses of worship and community organizations to serve as Safe Student Havens for students who may experience threatening situations to and from school.
All city public high schools will be monitored with supervision provided by each Precinct Commander.
