Newark Officer Injured in North Ward Police Pursuit that Ended in Belleville Crash

A Newark Police Officer suffered minor injuries after a pursuit in the North Ward caused a crash in Belleville overnight.

According to a preliminary investigation, police were called to a location in the North Ward to investigate reports of a person inside a vehicle armed with a gun just before midnight.

Police said when they arrived at the scene, they were told by the victim that suspects occupying a vehicle pointed a gun at him then sped away.

Officers caught up with the suspected car in the 700 block of Broadway and attempted to pull the vehicle over on Mill Street in Belleville, but the driver sped away from officers during the traffic stop, according to reports.

Police say the suspects crashed their car into a civilian vehicle near Mill and Main streets a short time after the pursuit.

According to reports, officers took three suspects into custody at the scene without further incident and a weapon was recovered. A police officer and a civilian were taken to an area hospital for treatment.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
