Newark, Northern NJ Prepares for Tropical Storm Fay

City officials around Northern New Jersey have alerted residents that due to Friday's anticipated heavy rainfall and potential thunderstorms, many local streets may be flooded and should be avoided.

According to The National Weather Service/National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Fay is currently located off the Mid-Atlantic coast and will continue to move northward today.

The impacts from this system will extend across the northeast portion of the country and through NJ dumping 3-5 inches of heavy rainfall, which will produce flash floods across the state.

Newark NJ city officials informing residents said embedded thunderstorms are predicted from morning to evening. A total of 1 to 3 inches of rainfall is forecasted for Newark with higher amounts possible. Torrential rain within a short period of time is possible.

**Newark Police advised residents to avoid the following streets due to potential flooding:**

Clay Street and McCarter Highway

South Street and Van Buren Street

Jefferson and Chestnut Streets

State Street near Broad Street

Jabez and Backus Streets

357 Wilson Avenue

Manufacturers Place and Hyatt Street

Magazine Street and Avenue L

Avenue L and Wilson Avenue

Ferry and Foundry Streets

Norfolk Street

Orange Street

Nesbitt Street

McClellan and Frelinghuysen Avenue, and

Frelinghuysen Avenue and the Route 22 underpass

Officials at The National Weather Service said Fay's wrath should taper off from Norther NJ Saturday morning.

Newark is coordinating responses to burglar alarms, flooding conditions and other weather-related incidents through the combined use of Police, Fire and Office of Emergency Management Personnel.

Officials said special attention should be given to unsecured outdoor furniture, awnings, refuse and building materials.

For fire safety, please utilize flashlights, instead of candles, should you lose electricity due to this weather event.
