According to information released by Clinton Hill Community Action,  Johnson was honored during the April 2,  Pre-Council Meeting at Newark City Hall, where the Municipal Council adopted a formal resolution recognizing her trailblazing contributions to the city’s cultural and civic life.

Known for her powerful voice that bridges community, culture, and justice, Johnson has long been a pillar in Newark’s South Ward. Her presence at the Newark City Council Chambers on Tuesday was met with resounding pride and admiration.

The resolution, sponsored by Council President Lawrence C. Crump, was presented in the presence of council members Carlos Gonzalez, Dupree Kelly, Louise Rountree, and Patrick Council—all of whom applauded Johnson’s enduring impact.

Surrounded by her children—Teal, Boaz, and Orchid—as well as supporters from the Clinton Hill Community Action and cherished seniors from her childhood neighborhood on Irvine Turner Boulevard, Johnson was celebrated not just for her words, but for her strong dedication to healing and uplifting Newark through the arts.

A passionate advocate for creative expression, Johnson recently led a group of young poets from the South Ward in a stirring performance at the Dodge Poetry Festival’s Community Day, showcasing her commitment to empowering the next generation of storytellers.

Throughout her career, officials said Johnson has used poetry as a tool for transformation—fostering resilience, elevating underrepresented voices, and nurturing a deeper sense of belonging throughout New Jersey’s largest city.
