Newark Man Sentenced to 15 Years for Kidnapping, Sexual Assault of Woman in Irvington

Newark

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino announced today that Samuel Reed, 40, of Newark, was sentenced to 15 years in state prison after pleading guilty to kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 37-year-old woman whom he did not previously know, in an abandoned apartment in Irvington.

Officials say Reed must serve 85 percent of the sentence before being eligible for parole. He must register under Megan’s Law and will be subject to Parole Supervision for Life. Reed was previously convicted of sexual assault in 2009 and sentenced to serve four years in prison.

Assistant Prosecutor Jenna Gouck, who handled the case, said, “We are satisfied with this resolution which gave the victim closure as to this aspect of the incident, and the ability to feel safer once again.’’

The kidnapping and sexual assault occurred in the late evening hours of March 5, 2017, into the early morning hours of March 6, 2017.

Officials say the victim was walking along Clinton Avenue in Irvington when she was approached by Reed who asked her for a light for his cigarette. As she searched her purse for a lighter, he pulled out a weapon, held it to head and led her to an abandoned apartment on Grove Street in Irvington where he would not allow her to leave and sexually assaulted her throughout the night.
