Newark Man Gets Four Years for Fatal Hit-and-Run

Newark

A 28-year-old Newark man was sentenced today to four years in prison for leaving the scene of a hit-and-run that ultimately killed an East Orange resident last year.

On Jan. 18, police responded to the intersection of McCarter Highway and Market Street in Newark at approximately 12:30 a.m. where Andy Soto struck Khendrai Williams with his vehicle.

On Dec. 7, Soto admitted driving a vehicle while his license was suspended and leaving the scene of the accident. He ultimately plead guilty and as part of a plea agreement, charges were downgraded to the charge of causing a death while violating a public policy.

Superior Court Judge Ronald Wigler stated that today’s sentence was taking into consideration that he did not believe Soto intended to kill Williams, but he did used bad judgement for driving with a suspended license and leaving the scene of the accident.
