Newark Man Gets 8 Years for Fatal Beating of Homeless Man in Irvington

A 40-year-old Newark man was sentenced yesterday to eight years in prison for beating a homeless man to death two years ago in Irvington.

According to Essex County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly, Jamel Arrington who was originally charged with murder in the death of William Crews, 46, but pleaded guilty to the lesser manslaughter charge.

Arrington must serve 85 percent of his sentence before he's eligible for parole.

The attacked occurred on April 2, 2014, on Western Parkway in Irvington.

Once police found Crews, he was transported to University Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Arrington was taken into custody a week after the attack.
