Newark Man Charged with South 20th Street Deadly Shooting

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II announced today that Juan Leandry, 23, of Newark, has been arrested and charged with the murder of Davion Sumler, 34, of Newark. 

Officials said on August 2, 2022, at 1:40 a.m., Newark Police discovered Sumler on the 300 block of South 20th Street, Newark, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Medical pronounced Sumler dead at the scene at 2:06 a.m.

After an investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force, Leandry was arrested andcharged on March 16 with first degree murder.

He was also charged with first degree conspiracy to commit murder; second degree unlawful possession of a weapon; second degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose; second degree arson; and second degreeconspiracy to commit arson. 

He is being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark.

These are accusations.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they enter a guilty plea or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
