Newark Man Charged With East Orange Murder

Authorities in Essex County announced today that Vernon Crook, 49, of Newark, has been arrested and charged in connection with the fatal shooting of Altariq Johnson, 36, of East Orange.

According to Newark Police, on October 8, 2022, officers responded to a report of a shooting on the 100 block of Brenner Street in Newark.

Police say officers found Johnson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

He was transported to University Hospital and pronounced dead at 3:42 a.m.

After an investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force, Crook has been charged with Murder and four weapon offenses:

Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose, Unlawful Possession of a Handgun - Prior to No Early Release Act (NERA) Conviction, and Certain Persons Not To Have Weapons.

He is in custody.
