Newark Man Charged with Assaulting Firefighters

Police arrested an emotionally distressed male then charges him with assault after he assaulted several firefighters in Newark on afternoon evening.

According to a statement released by police, the incident happened at approximately 3:30 p.m., firefighters were in the 800 block of S. 13th Street on a call for a possible carbon monoxide leak.

Police say crews arrived and observed a man throwing garbage around the area but contrary to other media outlet reports, no bricks or objects were thrown at firefighters.

Police say the suspect- Dayvon A. Perez, 19, of Newark- then climbed onto a fire the truck in an attempt to vandalize the vehicle.

Perez jumped off the truck and chest bumped a firefighter before climbing onto another fire truck and shoved a firefighter then chest-bumped a third firefighter police said.

Officials say police arrested the Perez without further incident.

EMS evaluated the firefighters but no serious injuries were reported according to police.
