A 26-year-old Newark man is facing multiple charges following a five-vehicle crash in Kearny that left another person seriously injured, according to Kearny Police.
Police said officers responded at approximately 8:46 p.m. Wednesday, to the area of Davis Avenue and Garfield Avenue after receiving reports of a motor vehicle collision involving at least five vehicles.
An investigation conducted by Officer Bismark Karikari and assisting officers determined that the driver of an involved Nissan Murano, identified as Jair A. Girioreyna, was allegedly displaying signs of impairment.
According to police, Girioreyna became combative with emergency medical personnel and was ultimately taken into custody on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
Investigators also obtained video footage of the collision, which police said appeared to show that the Nissan Murano caused the crash.
Authorities obtained a search warrant for a blood sample to determine Girioreyna’s blood alcohol content.
Due to serious injuries suffered by another person in the collision, police charged Girioreyna with Assault by Auto within 1,000 feet of a school causing bodily injury, Reckless Driving, Careless Driving, and Driving While Impaired.
Girioreyna was later released from custody, according to police.
