Newark Man Charged After Deadly Hit-and-Run Near Elementary School

Authorities have charged a Newark man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian and injured another late Monday night.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the incident occurred around 9 p.m. on July 28 in front of George Washington Carver Elementary School at 333 Clinton Place.
 

Officials said 33-year-old Segundo Carlos Bunay, of Newark, was driving a 2014 white Ford Econoline van when he struck two women. He initially fled the scene but later returned.

 

The victims included 28-year-old Eryn Montgomery, who was pronounced dead at University Hospital, and a 40-year-old Newark woman, who remains hospitalized in stable condition.

 

Bunay now faces several charges, including:

First-degree vehicular homicide while driving under the influence in a school zone

Second-degree reckless vehicular homicide

Second-degree leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death

Second-degree assault by auto while driving under the influence in a school zone

Third-degree leaving the scene of a crash resulting in serious injury

Two counts of third-degree endangering an injured victim
