Newark Ironbound Man Arrested for Operating Illegal Gambling, Alcohol Establishment

Police officials in Newark reports that members of the Special Enforcement Division arrested Jose DaSilva, 50, of Newark, for operating an illegal alcohol establishment last night.

According to a statement released by police, acting on complaints about the illegal sale of alcohol and gambling machines, police responded to 303 Lafayette Street at approximately 10:10 p.m. to investigate.

Police say upon entering the establishment, known as The Portuguese Sports Club, officers observed Jose DaSilva behind the bar serving assorted alcoholic beverages to patrons.

Officers recovered three Keno machines and three Fruit machines inside the establishment along with $407.00 from alcohol sales authorities said,

Police say they also recovered 177 assorted beers, two bottles of port wine and three bottles of various brands of liquor.

Police arrested DaSilva then charged him with Maintaining an Unlicensed Liquor Establishment, Unlawful Possession of Alcohol and Unlawful Possession of a Gambling Device.
