Newark Ironbound Acme Supermarket Set to Close its Doors

Newark

Company officials at Acme Supermarket in Newark's Ironbound section has officially announced that they will close the store in the middle of the month (June 15th).

Acme took over the location two years ago after Pathmark -owned by Foodtown- closed for business.

According to reports, the establishment suffered dwindling sales and had to pay about $125,000 a month to lease the space.

Some of Acme's employees, who spoke off the record, stated that they were offered employment at other stores owned by the company.

There are unconfirmed reports that space will be leased by a franchised gym, possibly LA Fitness.

The store's pharmacy has transferred all prescriptions to the Rite Aid on Ferry Street. Store officials have discounted most items in the store at 50%.
