Newark Gunfire Leaves One Dead in the East Ward

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a shooting that claimed the life of a male in Newark’s East Ward early Sunday morning.

 

According to preliminary information, Newark Police responded to reports of shots fired at approximately 2:40 a.m. after a ShotSpotter device detected gunfire in the area of 255 Parkhurst Street.

 

When several police units arrived at the scene, officers found a male victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

 

The victim was rushed to University Hospital for treatment, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

 

Police secured the area and established a crime scene as investigators began working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

 

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has since taken over the investigation.

 

No additional details regarding the victim’s identity or a possible suspect have been released at this time.

 

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
