Code Violations Shut Down Newark Grocery Store; The Site of 2012 Homicide

Officials announced the closing of a grocery store due to code enforcement violations.

According to authorities, yesterday the Business Task Force, comprising members of the Newark Police and Fire Divisions along with the city’s Code Enforcement Division and Health Department, conducted a code enforcement inspection at Family Grocery, located at 98 Clinton Avenue.

The violations included faulty electrical wiring, damaged and non-working smoke detectors and leaks.

The grocery store was the site of a September 2012 murder of Mr. Jamil Bader Jr., 18, who was working at the store when two armed men in ski masks stormed in around 9:55 p.m. demanding money, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

The suspects fatally shot Bader, multiple times, leaving him in the store to die authoritites said

“I commend the Business Task Force for their commitment to protecting the people who live, work and shop in the City of Newark,” Director Ambrose said regarding to store's closing. “Both lives and property are safeguarded as a result of these invaluable inspections.”
