Newark Firefighters Extinguish Mattress Fire Inside Home on South 16th Street

Firefighters in Newark swiftly knocked down a fast-moving fire that ignited inside a home in Newark Sunday evening.

According to officials, fire broke out inside a vacant two-story wood-framed house located at 838 South 16th Street shortly before 10:45 p.m.

Crews arrived and found a mattress burning inside one of the apartments at that location.

Firefighters were able to get water on the fire before flames extended to other areas of the building officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
