Newark firefighters battled a stubborn second-alarm fire overnight in the 200 block of Garside Street.

The fire was reported just before midnight with heavy flames showing from the second floor of a residential building.
Due to the volume of fire and concerns that flames had spread through a common cockloft, a second alarm was transmitted to bring additional firefighters to the scene.
Fire officials reported that multiple hose lines were placed into operation as crews worked aggressively to stop the fire from spreading to adjoining structures.
By approximately 12:32 a.m., incident commanders declared the fire under control, though firefighters remained at the scene conducting extensive overhaul operations to extinguish hidden hot spots.
There were no immediate reports of injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
