A new effort to combat rising food costs and ongoing food insecurity in Newark is set to take shape this week as United Community Corporation (UCC) prepares to unveil its latest community resource.
According to information sent by UCC officials, the organization will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, April 8, at 12:30 p.m. to mark the launch of a 24/7 Community Refrigerator located at First Presbyterian Church.
The initiative is part of UCC’s broader Community Refrigerator program, first introduced in 2022, which provides residents with free access to fresh produce, dairy items, and shelf-stable goods.
The refrigerators are designed to remove barriers often associated with traditional food assistance programs, offering a dignified and accessible option for individuals and families in need.
Organizers say placing the refrigerator along Broad Street, one of the city’s busiest corridors, will help reach residents facing increased financial pressure as grocery prices continue to climb.
The program also aims to support communities impacted by limited access to fresh food options, commonly referred to as food deserts, by offering around-the-clock availability for those unable to visit food pantries during standard hours.
Community leaders, local partners, and church representatives are expected to attend the event, which will include a ribbon-cutting and the unveiling of the newly stocked refrigerator.
Officials say the expansion reflects a growing need across Newark, where many households continue to feel the strain of inflation on everyday essentials like food.
