By: Richard L. Smith Residents across Newark and the North Jersey region are waking up to another steamy morning as the area continues to endure a days-long heatwave, though relief is expected by Thursday. While conditions may be slightly less intense than Tuesday’s record-setting heat, the difference will likely be hard to feel. As of early morning, downtown Newark was already at a humid 81 degrees. An Air Quality Alert remains in effect, and officials are urging anyone spending time outdoors to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks, and avoid direct sun exposure whenever possible. The combination of heat and humidity continues to create dangerous conditions, especially for children, seniors, and those with underlying health issues. There is a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms, particularly after 5 p.m., which could bring some temporary relief from the oppressive heat. Tonight’s forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with a low around 74 degrees and a continued chance of storms. The heatwave is expected to finally break overnight, with Thursday bringing slightly cooler and more comfortable weather to the region. Until then, residents are reminded to check on neighbors, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and use cooling centers if needed. Stay safe, New Jersey. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are set to soar once again on Wednesday, reaching a high near 98 degrees with heat index values climbing as high as 103.
