Newark East Ward Pursuit Leads to Arrest of Teen in Jersey City

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose announced the arrest of a Jersey City teen for eluding after he fled from police.

According to authorities, shortly after 1:30 this morning, residents called police to report a suspicious van in a Ferry Street parking lot.

According to the callers, the vehicle occupants were looking in parked vehicles.

As Officers Carlo Silva and Manuel Cortez drove into the area to investigate, the van sped away.

The officers followed the car into Jersey City where the four suspects jumped out of the van on Communipaw Avenue and ran.

Officers Jose Depazo, Manuel Cortez and Wayne Pugh apprehended a 17-year-old Jersey City teen hiding in a nearby backyard without incident authorities said.

The other suspects remain at large.

The van was recovered prior to the owner realizing it had been stolen.

The teen was taken into custody and charged with eluding, receiving stolen auto, reckless driving, and unlicensed driver.
